Today’s Fortune Cookie – You have to ‘have to’

“Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley”

Have you ever stopped yourself from even trying something – a change, a new task, a new challenge – because we can’t figure out ‘HOW’?

Many times, how to succeed is only revealed along the journey. How can you open Door #4 when you haven’t even stepped through Door #1 yet?

Instead of needing to have the path to success fully baked, focus first on WHY, as in “Why is doing this so important for me”.  Without a very compelling need to succeed on this journey, you will be easily thrown off by lost commitment, multitudes of very logical excuses, busyness, lack of clarity, and seemingly unmovable obstacles. To get over that mountain, you have to ‘have to’.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Why is doing this (whatever ‘this’ is) so important for me, to the point where it is non-negotiable – that is, I must do it?
  • What will be the benefit of the outcome? (What will i gain from succeeding?)
  • What may be the benefits of the journey? (How will i change/grow/strengthen along the way?)
  • What may be the costs of my efforts? (time, resources, physical/emotional challenge?)
  • Considering all of the potential costs and benefits, why do i absolutely have to go for it, being unstoppable along the way no matter what the challenge or obstacle in front of me?

By asking yourself these questions, you may find increased clarity, strengthened resolve, heightened confidence, improved drive and amplified courage. Now you are ready to start the climb…
